Superstar Jason Statham is building an incredible success story. Here’s how he uses his home base to fuel his passions

Jason Statham (pronounced /?ste???m/; born 12 September 1972) is an English actor and martial artist, known for his roles in the Guy Ritchie crime films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; Revolver; and Snatch. Statham appeared in supporting roles in several American films, such as The Italian Job, as well as playing the lead role in The Transporter, Crank, The Bank Job, War (opposite martial arts star Jet Li), and Death Race. Statham will be appearing alongside the old-school action film actors Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Dolph Lundgren in The Expendables. He normally performs his own fight scenes and stunts.

As if someone called ahead and choreographed it. That’s the traffic setup before us on Sunset Boulevard: a half-dozen cars staggered at intervals between two lanes. Jason Statham, the Transporter himself, sees this and smirks. “Oh yeah, mate.” He drops the stick down into second and pops it. The engine wails and my skull slams back into the headrest. The wind tears through the open window, and I clamp onto the window frame, because this little monster car has nothing else to hold on to. That may be its only design flaw.

Statham weaves through the traffic. Slips it into third. Approaches 70 on the speedometer. Two cars, three, four. We’re in a friggin’ movie now. Then I see it coming up fast, less than 100 yards ahead: yellow light. Statham snakes past one more SUV, slips in front of it, and comes to a perfect, nonscreeching halt at the red light. He chuckles and shakes his head, clearly in the car lover’s private nirvana. “I tell ya, mate, a fast car is the absolute best gift a man can give himself.”

This particular gift is the Audi R8, a two-seat, six-speed V-8 that  has maybe four fingers’ clearance between the frame and the pavement. “Why couldn’t they shoehorn a V-10 in there?” Statham wonders. Audi’s letting him play with it, but he has every intention of buying it. The price tag hovers around $120,000. To Statham, it’s money well spent. A man is not defined by his possessions, he figures, but by his passions. And cars—specifically, fast German cars—make this tough guy’s knees knock.

“When you get into an R8, all that childhood shit comes back to you,” he says. “I got in a race the other day with some guy in a Mercedes. And it’s one of those things, ‘Oh no, I really should not be doing this.’ But this guy was such an ass. In one of those new SL55 AMG convertibles with his chick, and the music on. He pulled up really quick next to me. Then he zipped in front of me at the next light. So I got aside of him  and he’s giving me that look. So I dropped it into sport and just went whoosh like a missile. He never even saw my tire smoke.” Statham grins. “I know I shouldn’t have been doing it. But everyone has a maturity relapse sometime.”

Careerwise, Statham has never taken a step back. Film work has been steady: two Transporter films, several others with his friend Guy Ritchie, 2006’s Crank, and most recently War, opposite Jet Li. (“He’s the world’s greatest martial artist and has been ever since Bruce Lee passed away,” Statham says.) There was also a remake of the cult classic Death Race 2000. And that was his entire goal when he moved to Los Angeles 4 years ago. “I wasn’t coming here to schmooze and find out where the cool places are,” he says. “Screw that. I wanted to come out here and get some work done.”

Statham learned that lesson early. Born in a working-class family in London, he had his first job with his father and brother, demonstrating products at trade shows: car wax and carpet cleaner at car shows, for example. This was a big thing in the United Kingdom. Trade laws kept local shops closed  on Sundays, so places like Wembley Stadium would host massive Sunday markets. Then the laws changed. “We had 10 years of good money,” he says. “Lucrative, cash, plenty of it. Then it all went away.”

Fortunately, Statham had created a backup plan without even knowing it. He’d been a competitive diver. A good one. Good enough to land on the British National team. Diving isn’t the easiest way to make money as an athlete, of course, but Statham’s gymnastic skills and conditioning habits unwittingly laid the foundation for his upcoming film career.

It was during these hard times that director Ritchie famously discovered Statham, asking him to audition by playing a street vendor and casting him in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. A film career was born—a career hot enough to let Statham indulge his automotive passions while still living very much by his intense working-class standards.

“I know that a good thing usually does come to an end,” he says. “You want to shovel as much under the mattress as you can, so if a rainy day ever comes, you can just drip-feed from that. You’ve got to handle things delicately. And my career has to be handled very delicately. If I don’t produce, they’re on to the next guy. So I’m always thinking like that. You’re never on safe, hallowed ground in this game.”

That attitude isn’t at odds with the purchase of six-figure autos as much as it appears to be. The more time you spend with Statham, the more you see that he is hardly extravagant by Hollywood standards. In fact, he’s done what many men try, and fail to do: arrange his lifestyle in such a way that it supports and streamlines everything he does. It actually helps him succeed, because it allows him to be happy and be himself. All that’s left to do is kick ass and collect a paycheck. And for Statham, that lifestyle starts at home.

Statham lives in the hills of West Hollywood, about 20 seconds and one R8 fishtail from the Sunset Strip (as I found out firsthand). From the outside, it looks unremarkable: nothing but a concrete wall, impenetrable vegetation, and a garage door. (That’s for the R8 and his Audi RS6 sedan, “the black stealth bomber,” Statham calls it; his bum-around vehicle, an Audi Q7 SUV, gets the short end out by the curb.)

Inside, it’s a sanctuary. That’s what drew him to it—that, and the architecture. It’s essentially a one-story glass house cut into the hill, tucked in with retaining walls on three sides. There’s a small wading pool in the front patio. (“A birdbath,” he calls it. “No fear of drowning in there.”) If you stand by that pool, you can see clear through three glass walls into the living room, the dining room, another outdoor seating area, and his bedroom.

“I had this old Spanish place in Hollywood,” he says as he gives the tour, “which was lovely. But I split up with a girl, so I was a bit like, ‘Screw this, I want something less chintzy.’ I’ve always liked modern, contemporary architecture. Lots of light. Simple. Easily maintained. I’ve always wanted a midcentury glass house, because you can’t get them in England because the weather’s such crap. You’d freeze your nuts off and be constantly cleaning the windows.”

And in this house, there are windows everywhere. And skylights. In fact, during the day you don’t have to turn on any lights. The kitchen is wide open, looking into a rec room with a big plasma TV and couches. You can see his bedroom from here, too. And his office. There’s even a floor-to-ceiling window looking into the guest bathroom from the kitchen. “You’ll catch someone having a moment if they don’t close the blinds,” Statham says, chuckling.

He loves the house because it fits exactly what he needs to do—and not do. It allows him to work and travel, but also to live and entertain well when he’s home. The white marble tile floor doesn’t need vacuuming. No gardening, because there’s no yard. The fireplace is gas. And in the outdoor seating area between his bedroom and the dining room (encased in glass, naturally), there’s a koi pond that was recently rendered maintenance-free by local raccoons. “I had some big, juicy carp,” he says. “The rat bastards cleaned me out. I watched them do it, but I don’t have a gun.”

Next to the pond is a curious item—a concrete urn filled with black sand. Statham smiles, turns a knob next to it, and puts a match to the sand. Whomp, instant campfire. “There’s  a gas ring beneath the sand,” he says. “This looks the bollocks at night. This is where the beer drinking and bullshitting are done.

“It’s a lot like a big apartment,” he says as we adjourn to the white living-room couch. “That’s why I bought this place. There’s a line of sight everywhere. You can always be heard or seen in any part of the house. I love the open kitchen. If the boys come around to watch football or boxing, you can be doing a bit of cooking and see the TV. It’s the most practical kind of setup I could ever wish for.”

That’s what he believes men should strive harder for. Rather than trying to impress with your digs and your car, turn the attention inward and find the place that feeds your lifestyle and passions. You’re the one living there, after all. Everyone else just visits. Statham certainly could’ve blown more money on a bigger, more extravagant place higher in the hills. But he doesn’t see the point. In the 2 years since he moved in, he’s lived, worked, and played in peace. “This is all I need.”

Whether it’s a garage, workout room, or finished basement, every man has some small territory he can call, and make, his own. To that end, Statham suggests following these rules.

Always choose your own stuff. The Hollywood way would be to hire a home stylist to come into your new house and outfit it with the latest appointments, from uncomfortable sofas to offensive color schemes to incomprehensible artwork. “Bollocks,” says Statham. He decorated the entire place himself. The color scheme is monochromatic, which works well in the natural light. The couches are for sitting. The kitchen is for mess-making. The floor is for spilling. And yet it all has cohesive class. The real secret, Statham says, is lots of patience. “I didn’t do it all at once. I picked as I went. Within a few months, I was done, and I don’t have to worry about it anymore unless I see something I really like.”

Decorate from within. Interior decorating should not be scoffed at. In fact, if you put your imagination to work and think about what reflects you, it’s easy. Statham has some cool photography on the walls. There’s a massive pic of Steve McQueen driving a convertible within sight of virtually every room in the house. “McQueen’s the original icon, isn’t he? That’s the first thing I’ve ever spent an extravagant amount of money on, an original by William Claxton.”

Another photo of Muhammad Ali dominates the guest bedroom. “A mate gave me that for my birthday last year. His dad took it, Chris Smith. I’ve always been a massive fan of Ali.” His office shelves are full of personal photos, and a matted, framed trio of (unscathed) silhouette pistol targets hangs in his kitchen. Hang whatever makes you feel more like yourself—if it’s framed, it’ll have class.

Get away as much as possible. If your place becomes too much of a sanctuary, you’ll destroy the point of creating it in the first place. You have to go out and live well.

Statham, surprisingly enough, has no home fitness equipment—which is significant when you consider his line of work. He prefers to leave his place for fitness. Right now he’s training for the Death Race remake, hitting a gym near the airport—all the more significant, given what a pain driving can be in L.A. (even in an R8). But stuntmen work out at that gym, and it’s outfitted with exactly the things Statham needs to prepare for a job (He recently lost 17 pounds in 6 weeks prepping for this role). Again: It’s one less thing to maintain on the home front, and going to the gym allows him to interact with his coworkers.

Try to impress women—but not too hard. You don’t want  your place to turn off the ladies, of course. But at the same time, “I’ve always thought it was uncomfortable to strategically set up some kind of situation with scented candles, a fire, the right music on,” says Statham. “You just don’t know what runs through girls’ heads. One might be like, ‘Okay, he’s definitely trying to get in my jeans, the bastard.’ Another might be like, ‘Oh, he’s trying really hard to impress me. He must really like me.’ ”

Statham pauses, and then smiles. “Besides, women will always find something to make you wrong. So just make yourself happy.” He bursts out laughing. “Then at least one person will be happy!”

Kate Moss Muses on 20 Years at the Top

Katherine “Kate” Ann Moss (born 16 January 1974) is an English model. She has appeared on over 300 magazine covers. She is known for her waifish figure, uncommonly short height for a fashion model, and appearances in many advertising campaigns. She is also notorious for her high-profile relationships and party lifestyle. In 2007, she came 2nd on the Forbes top-earning models list, estimated to have earned $9 million in one year.

Miss Kate Moss, one of the world’s most super supermodels, has been a model for about 62 percent of her life, almost all of that time being one of the very top supermodels in the world. And yet she has chosen not to pursue a career as a film star, a rock star, or the first lady of a nation. She has generally avoided talk shows and magazine interviews and scrupulously avoided writing an autobiography or going to jail.

And on top of all that, Kate is now much more than a supermodel, much more than an industry; she is now also a museum show. In the spring of 2011, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris will stage a major exhibition on Kate, almost as if she were Toulouse-Lautrec or Madame Vionnet. It seems quite unprecedented, as if this girl who was once decried for perpetrating a wave of waifdom on the world, who literally lowered the bar for models (to about five foot seven), were herself a fine artist.

On the occasion of this elevation to museum piece, it did make some sense to this particular reporter, who has known Kate for about 50 percent of her life, since working with her to sell Calvin Klein underwear to the masses, to call her up and ask her about this extraordinary turn of events. As background, it’s now easy to say that I spotted something special in her even back then, when she was 18, but it’s absolutely true. She wasn’t your typical 18-year-old; she had the veneer of an old soul and a sense of humor to match. Over the years, it wasn’t hard to notice that her own personal style seemed to transform, or at least epitomize, an entire generation. And it was much more than her style, it was the attitude and spirit that drove that style. And although she was an apparent misfit, literally, she proved to be the consummate professional.

But career longevity is not the reason there is a Kate Moss museum show. The reason is that she is the model of the age. She is a new Dovima, but also a new Dora Maar. She is the Jean Shrimpton of a generation, but also its Elizabeth Siddal. She is the subject of an extraordinary body of work, as she has created extraordinary images with Peter Lindbergh, Mario Sorrenti, Juergen Teller, Steven Klein, Mario Testino, Corinne Day, Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Damien Hirst, and Richard Prince. Today, when a woman is called a muse, she is as often as not a socialite or model who’s the BFF of a major fashion designer. Kate has undoubtedly inspired fashion designers, but she has played the role of muse in the more traditional sense. She channels spirits for them and conjures states of mind and mood that take the viewer somewhere special. So if any model deserves a museum show, it’s Kate.

Kate doesn’t like to do interviews. And that actually makes me more interested in talking to her on the record. I want the chitchat behind the story. I want to know how she decided what to put on this morning or if she knows any interesting kids’ stores or where you can get something good to eat in Milan.

Demi Guynes Kutcher (pronounced /d??mi?/; born November 11, 1962), known professionally as Demi Moore, is an American actress. After minor roles in film and a role in the television drama series General Hospital, Moore established her career in films such as St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), and in the early 1990s became one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood with her successes in Ghost (1990), A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Disclosure (1994). Demi Moore has a wonderful life up in the Hollywood Hills. She lives in an aerie that could fit a giraffe, has a chef that makes delicious vegetably things that make you feel like a better person, and serves more beverages than you can poke a stick at (coconut water? Red Bull?). Add to that, she married Ashton Kutcher, the dude who lost his car but found love with a woman 15 years his senior and scooped up three stepkids, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, in the bargain.

Today, Demi is plopped on the floor of her screening room — huge man-size television, paintings of bears, orange shag rug — in vintage high-waisted 501s, a T-shirt that says WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, and thick black glasses. (Baby’s first glasses are on her childhood Twitter profile pic.) She is drinking Vita Coco coconut water, since she’s weaned herself off an “eight-a-day” Red Bull habit. “I don’t like drinking water, so this is great,” she says. Ask her the secret to her age-defying hotness (obviously not traditional hydration) and she replies, “Hotness? Well, if you want to look at how dorky I am.” But look no further than her hands for a little movie-star fabulosity: two diamond Cartier Panthère rings. Panthères as in panthers, which some people call pumas. Demi likes pumas; she infinitely prefers them to cougars. “Cougar has become so distasteful,” she says, nose wrinkling. “I really hate that expression.” She said recently that when it comes to her relationship, she’d prefer to be called a puma. “It has a sweeter quality, more elegant. And then somebody said to me, ‘Pumas are only for people in their 30s.’”

Gwyneth Kate Paltrow (pronounced /??w?n?? ?pæltro?/; born September 27, 1972) is an American actress.

Paltrow made her acting debut on stage in 1990 and started appearing in films in 1991. She gained early notice for her work in films such as Se7en (1995), Emma (1996), in which she played the title role, and Sliding Doors (1998). She garnered worldwide recognition through her performance in Shakespeare in Love (1998), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, a Golden Globe Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, for Outstanding Lead Actress and as a member of the Outstanding Cast. Since then, Paltrow has portrayed supporting as well as lead roles in films such as The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Shallow Hal (2001) and Proof (2005), for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress in Motion Picture Drama. Kareena Kapoor (Hindi: ????? ????; born on 21 September 1980), often informally referred to as Bebo, is an Indian film actress who appears in Bollywood films.

Born into a film family where both her parents, Randhir Kapoor and Babita, and her elder sister Karisma were actors, Kapoor faced the media spotlight from a very young age.

In 2004, Kapoor began dating actor Shahid Kapoor whom she eventually parted with during the filming of Jab We Met in 2007.

In September 2007, speculation began to surface that she was dating Saif Ali Khan. On 18 October 2007, during Manish Malhotra’s grand finale show at the Lakme Fashion Week, Khan confirmed their relationship to the media.

Kapoor is very close to her family and has resided with her mother Babita for much of her life. Kapoor and her mother lived together in Lokhandwala and then at Park Avenue in Bandra, Mumbai for several years, and in 2008 Kapoor and her mother purchased adjacent flats in Khar, Mumbai designed by Twinkle Khanna.

Early life and family

Born in Mumbai, Maharashtra into the Kapoor film family of Punjabi Khatri origin, Kapoor is the youngest daughter of actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita (née Shivdasani).

She is the granddaughter of actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor, great-granddaughter of actor Prithviraj Kapoor, sister of actress Karisma Kapoor and niece of actor Rishi Kapoor.

According to Kapoor, the name “Kareena” was derived from the book Anna Karenina, which her mother read while she was pregnant with her. She is also often informally referred to as Bebo.

As children, the Kapoor sisters dreamed of becoming actresses. Kapoor was particularly inspired by actresses Nargis and Meena Kumari.

However, despite her family background, her father disapproved of women acting because he believed it to be incompatible with their duty to the family.

This led to conflict between her parents, and Kapoor’s mother ultimately left her father.Kapoor was raised in Lokhandwala by her mother who worked several jobs to support her daughters until Karisma debuted as an actress in 1991.

Kapoor attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai before progressing to Welham Girls Boarding School in Dehradun.

She studied commerce for two years at the Mithibai College in Vile Parle, Mumbai. However, she disliked her term there and studied only because she was close to her family.

Kapoor then registered for a three-month summer course in microcomputers at Harvard University in the United States.

She later developed an interest in law and enrolled at the Government Law College in Churchgate. However, after completing one year at Churchgate, Kapoor returned to her initial plan to become an actress and began training at the Kishore Namit Kapoor’s Acting Institute in Andheri.

Career

Debut and breakthrough, 2000-2003

Kapoor was initially scheduled to make her debut in Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), opposite the director’s son Hrithik Roshan.

However, several days into the filming, she abandoned the project and later explained that “it was probably destined that I was not to be in the film. After all, it was a launch for his son. The whole focus was on the boy. Now I am glad I did not do the movie.”

Kapoor made her debut later that year in J.P. Dutta’s war drama Refugee. Set during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, the film centers on a man known simply as “Refugee” (portrayed by debutant Abhishek Bachchan). He illegally transports civilians back and forth across the Indo-Pakistani border.

Kapoor portrayed Naaz, a Bangladeshi girl who falls in love with Refugee while illegally migrating to Pakistan with her family. Her debut performance was acclaimed by critics; Taran Adarsh of indiaFM wrote: “Kareena Kapoor has a magnetic personality, which will make the viewer fall in love with her instantly.

What surprises you is the ease with which she emotes the most difficult of scenes […] There’s no denying the fact that she is a natural performer who is very camera friendly.”

Refugee was the fifth-highest grossing film in India in 2000, and Kapoor’s performance earned her the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award

However, she did not make her acting debut until the 2000 film Refugee, which earned her the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award.

Her melodrama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham became India’s highest grossing film in the overseas market in 2001 and is her biggest commercial success to date.

Following in the footsteps of the upcoming final ‘Harry Potter’ films, Summit Entertainment announced Friday that ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ will be split into two separate films, E! Online reports. The first installment will hit theaters on Nov. 18, 2011. Melissa Rosenberg is nailing down the new scripts, which will be directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon. The press release states production on ‘Breaking Dawn’ will begin this fall.
‘Breaking Dawn’ is based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ series and is set to star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner along with Billy Burke as Charlie Swan and returning members of the Cullen family, including Peter Facinelli as Carlisle, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper, Nikki Reed as Rosalie, Ashley Greene as Alice and Kellan Lutz as Emmett.

The cute couple strolled along through the crowded New York City terminal, greeting a few friends as they prepared for takeoff.

Work of Art: The Next Great Artist premiered this week on Bravo, and it is quote-worthy, gooey fun. It’s got the same structure and feel as pre-Lifetime Project Runway (which originated on Bravo before it was lost in a custody battle), and if you think Michael Kors sounds a little full of himself when he preaches about the importance of fashion, wait till you get a load of these guys.

The show began, as reality competition shows do, by introducing the 14 contestants. This process was illustrated by their self-portraits, so there was immediately plenty of cattiness as they walked around, passively aggressively critiquing each other’s work. I can tell you right now that the sound bites on this show are going to be amazing; the premiere included such gems as “I live to create and create to live” and “I’m really into lilies right now. And hermaphrodites.” I was surprised at how decidedly non-stereotypical most of the artists look. Sure, some have angular haircuts and tight pants and Bettie Page bangs, but some look like your average cubicle mate, and some are decidedly un-artist-like in appearance, like the jolly, big-boned Latino man (Mark) or the Stepford Wife with a penchant for flowery accessories (Jamie Lynn). Plus they all work in different media, from abstract oil to sculpture to Photoshop, and one of them seems to base her entire style in using the word “pussy.”

After meeting China Chow (the show’s non-German Heidi Klum) and Simon de Pury (French Tim Gunn), the artists were immediately split into pairs and asked to create portraits of one another—an assignment, we were told, that’s more about “capturing the other person’s essence.” Look at that, we’ll be getting an art education, too!

The workroom scenes—as with Project Runway—are a lot of fun; we get to see the artists at work and watch them annoy each other. Simon occasionally pops in to check on their progress, but most of what he says is ignored by this group—in their confessionals, the one who don’t do well with criticism retaliate with commentary like, “I’m just going to let the piece take a life of its own.” Side note: Simon’s going to need a Make it work!-style catchphrase.

Unlike on Project Runway, the Work of Art judges were given the chance to talk about their perspective on what makes art art (this would sound ridiculous on any other show, but works here). Judging took place during a gallery show (complete with cups of wine, because you can’t have a gallery opening without vino!), after which the judges gathered, just like they do on Runway and Top Chef, to discuss the quality of each piece. While some spoke of how each artwork spoke to them, I appreciated gallery owner and Michael Kors archetype Bill Powers, who simply said, “I couldn’t sell this piece to somebody.”

Just as I’d hoped, larger-than-life performance artist Nao was the first contestant to challenge the judges’ critiques. “I’m not responsible for your experience of my work,” she scoffed, unknowingly coining what I hope will be the Work of Art version of “I’m not here to make friends.”

Quirky OCD hipster Miles won the first challenge; sweet abstract oil painter Amanda was sent home. And with that, the internet lit up with debate over whether anyone has the authority to deem someone else’s art worthy, or to say what art is worth. But let’s be honest, looking to a reality show to answer those questions is pointless. What Work of Art does for me is provide a “can’t look away” glimpse into the minds of artists who are just nutty enough to be on TV.

Is it finally okay to be a 13-year-old sissy? From the feather-cuffed, drama-filled Olympic figure-skating competitions to the unashamedly oddball high-school TV show Glee, being young and gay suddenly has a place in pop culture that isn’t cruel or tragic.

Of course, there has never been a lack of gay subtext on TV (Dukes of Hazzard, Pee-wee Herman, Jonny Quest, SpongeBob). But it seems that, in our world of niche-entertainment marketing, gay boys are becoming a viable demographic, up there with tween girls and security moms. Call them Twinkles: preteen boys who may not know they are gay yet, or may not want to say they are gay yet, but who have a gleam in their eye and a definite sensibility. Twinkles proudly prance, unashamedly emote, high-kick, jazz-hand, belt out “Paparazzi” with piano — everything a gay kid used to do in his bedroom with the door shut.

Consider the current range of twinkle archetypes and twinkle-friendly supporters. We have High School Musical’s Ryan singing with spunk and no convincing female romantic interest. Kurt on Glee is an intelligent and confident sissy main character. Ugly Betty’s Justin gets to kiss a boy.

Project Runway champ Christian Siriano gives off a consistently femmy fierceness. The raccoon-eyed, magician-wardrobed Adam Lambert is basically a 14-year-old gay kid’s fantasy of a rock star. There is even a heartthrob: Taylor Lautner. I’m not claiming he’s gay; there’s just something about him. No matter how hard-bodied and abstinent the Twilight franchise tries to make him, it cannot repress the ascending megastar’s yearning sweetness or his droves of swooning boy-fans.

Maybe the most significant sign of the times is piano-playing sixth grader Greyson Chance, who belted out Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” at his high-school talent show and got a record deal a month later. (I’m not saying he is gay either — but he sure is twinkly.)

The twinkle’s market power has not been scientifically measured, but their consumer presence is getting noticed. “Young males today are shopping more than any other generation before them,” says Mike Gatti, executive director of the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, a division of the National Retail Federation. “In the last year or so, we’re seeing a proliferation of merchandise targeting young men — clothing and also things like skincare, lotion, and hair products aimed at 12- and 13-year-old boys. We’re also seeing young boys buying things that cross traditional gender lines.”

Beyond the money to be made with this market, there’s the telling fact that sensitive wizard role model (albeit heterosexual) Daniel Radcliffe is going to be appearing in a PSA for gay-youth suicide prevention. “Pre-Internet, a Twinkle would have had a very difficult and potentially dangerous time finding his peers,” says David Kleeman, president of American Center for Children and the Media. “With hundreds of TV channels and in-game advertising and Internet adver-gaming and product placement , there are virtually infinite options to target the real niche groups of kids who are most likely interested in what you’re selling.” And to reassure them that they are far from alone.

All of this is abetted by the deliberate parenting of the first generation to have had queer studies in its college curriculum. It’s become almost fashionable to look for — instead of dread — signs of queerness in this generation’s offspring. A couple I know in Brooklyn have a 7-year-old son who loves to bead instead of play soccer and recently made a careful drawing of a Tab can with pink markers. And the other week, my friend Seth was trying to give his 12-year-old son, Jake, supportive advice. “I was trying to tell him that it was okay if he liked boys or girls,” says Seth. “He just interrupted me to say, ‘Yeah, I know, Dad. Right now, I don’t like either.’?”

She is already considered Hollywood royalty and now it seems Angelina Jolie may play a real queen on the big screen.

The Oscar-winning actress is reportedly lined-up to portray Cleopatra in a film based on a recently published biography written by Stacy Schiff.

Billboard magazine has listed Mariah Carey, now, 36, as the bestselling artist of the 1990s. She suffered a breakdown in 2001 after being dropped from Virgin Records and receiving poor reviews for her film Glitter. But she had a major comeback with The Emancipation of Mimi, the best-selling pop album of 2005 .

Mary Carey, whose real name is Mary Cook, is likely best-known for running for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003 and coming in 10th in a field of 135 candidates. The 26-year-old performer attempted another run in 2006 but dropped out to take care of her ailing mother.

She started using the stage name in 2002 and filed the trademark papers in early 2006.

Her lawyer, David Beitchman, said the singer’s claim that fans could confuse the two is unfounded.

“My first thought was, does Mariah Carey realize what her lawyer is comparing her to and are they seriously

concerned?” Beitchman said. “Do they seriously think the fans are going to be confused?”

Beitchman’s client has starred in films such as Double Air Bags 11 and Boobsville Sorority Girls. Mary Carey has said she’s amused by the legal battle.

“It’s kind of funny because I’m a porn star and I’ve been being myself for a long time. I think she’s being silly.”

A Lady Gaga performance in Manchester and a BBC Radio drama have sparked a flood of complaints about insensitivity for depicting murder scenes just a day after a mass shooting across villages in northwest England.

On Wednesday, British taxi driver Derrick Bird killed 12 people — including his twin brother and a lawyer for his family — during a three-hour rampage in the county of Cumbria before taking his own life. Eleven people were also wounded.

With handguns banned in the U.K. and multiple shootings rare, the crime is Britain’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996. It has shocked the country and made headlines worldwide.

On Wednesday night at her concert in Manchester, the already scandalous Lady Gaga left thousands of British fans aghast when she and her dancers enacted a staged murder scene. The performance included a man dressed in black “attacking” the chart-topping pop singer-songwriter, who appeared to die on stage, covered in blood.

“We know Lady Gaga is not exactly mainstream performance for all the family, but she really crossed the line this time,” a woman, who attended the concert with her teenage daughter, told the Daily Mail.

“The scene may have been part of her show, but it could have been toned down, given the violent events of Bradford and Cumbria.”

It is not the first time the entertainer has performed a gory death scene, but Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has not commented on the criticism.

However, she is scheduled to perform another concert in nearby Sheffield on Friday evening before returning to North America, where she will continue her Monster Ball Tour starting with a June 28 date in Montreal.

BBC drama shocks

The BBC also horrified some of its audience by broadcasting the radio play Six Impossible Things — which is based on the real-life story of a Danish murder in the 1950s — on Thursday afternoon. The drama included the sound of gunshots and the killer making threats.

“With hindsight, we believe it should not have been broadcast,” the BBC said. “We regret any offence that was caused.”

Long-running soap Coronation Street — beloved by fans worldwide — has also been affected by the tragic shooting this week.

Coronation Street had been in the midst of a storyline revolving around a convicted murderer who enacts a plan of revenge and takes victims hostage. According to promotional material, the plot involves a shooting and the deaths of regular characters.

After the Cumbria shootings, show producers pulled both Wednesday night’s and Thursday night’s episodes off the air. On Friday, they announced that they would continue the postponement.

“Against the backdrop of Wednesday’s tragic events in Cumbria, it would have been inappropriate to broadcast these episodes this week,” an ITV spokesperson said in an apology to viewers. The displaced episodes will air in the U.K. starting Monday, with the schedule to return to normal by Thursday.

Flamboyant chanteuse Lady Gaga swept the U.K.’s Brit Awards on Tuesday, winning three categories and offering an emotional tribute to Alexander McQueen, the British fashion designer who died last week.

Gaga collected awards for best international female artist, best international breakthrough act and best international album for The Fame, and performed at the ceremony wearing a towering white wig and lace veil, complete with ornate lace eyebrows.

At points, the singer appeared overcome with emotion and paid tribute to McQueen as she collected her first prize, referring to the designer by the name Lee. “Thank you to Lee McQueen,” Gaga said, her voice strained.

Gaga, a friend of the designer, recently wore his iconic lobster-claw shoes in her Bad Romance music video. The designer was found dead Thursday after apparently committing suicide.

The awards are the British equivalent of the Grammys, with most winners selected by a vote of more than 1,000 industry members.

U.S. rapper Jay-Z also claimed an award, for best international male, during a ceremony at London Earl’s Court arena. Other international nominees had included Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Jay-Z, Canada’s Michael Bublé and Shakira.

British boy band JLS claimed an award for best domestic breakthrough act, while recently split rockers Oasis won a one-off prize when their (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? was named best British album of the last 30 years.

Best British band award went to Kasabian. Former Take That member and solo artist Robbie Williams received a special award for contribution to music.

Back in the ’80s, I doubt anyone would have predicted that The Karate Kid would be a movie that would live to see a 21st-century remake. Passing up the ubiquitous virginity-losing storylines of the Reagan era in favour of a revenge-of-the-nerd plot with clunky zen-master dialogue, John G. Avildsen’s teen version of Rocky seemed dated even in 1984.

But that very innocence is what made The Karate Kid a fan favourite, and director Harald Zwart (Agent Cody Banks) is clearly among the film’s devotees. While his modern, big-budget revamp features high-tech kung fu and the precocious offspring of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, it also retains enough of what was good in the original to ensure the popular franchise keeps right on kicking.

The least confidential deal in Hollywood has finally gone public.

Summit Entertainment announced Friday that yes, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will be split into two separate films, with part one slated for a Nov. 18, 2011, release.

And good news: Whoever doesn’t die in Eclipse is coming back for Breaking Dawn, even those hard-to-pin-down Cullens, Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz.

Saga scribe Melissa Rosenberg is currently hard at work converting the 756-page conclusion of Stephenie Meyer‘s four-novel magnum opus into two screenplays, both of which will be directed by Bill Condon, who signed on for one knowing he’d most likely end up doing two.

In the meantime, even though Eclipse has been all over the Internet in bits and pieces, the whole thing from start to finish finally barrels into theaters on June 30.

It was unclear what prompted the obscene gesture from a luxury suite. The Mets say the singer did not attend the second game.

Synopsis

The film begins with a narration describing how the Olympians managed to overthrow their own creators, the Titans, through the aid of the Kraken, Hades’s creation.

After their fierce struggle, Zeus (Liam Neeson) became the King of the Gods, his brother, Poseidon (Danny Huston), the Lord of the Seas, and their brother, Hades (Ralph Fiennes), tricked by Zeus to rule the sickening Underworld in chaos and terror.

A coffin is then seen drifting through the sea before it is rescued by a fisherman, Spyros (Pete Postlethwaite).

When Spyros opens it, he discovers the baby Perseus and his dead mother, Danaë, inside and raises the boy as his own.

Perseus does not know who his real father and mother are, and worries that he will be neglected when his adoptive parents have a child of their own, but Spyros reassures him of his love.

Years later, Perseus (Sam Worthington) and his family are fishing when they witness a group of soldiers from Argos destroying a massive statue of Zeus, effectively declaring war on the gods.

Immediately following the fall of the statue, Hades rises from the ocean, killing most of the soldiers and then destroying the boat Perseus and his family are on.

Perseus attempts to save his family from the sinking boat, but is unable to, and passes out on driftwood from the wreckage. The surviving soldiers find him and take him back to Argos.

When King Kepheus (Vincent Regan) and Queen Cassiopeia (Polly Walker) of Argos, at a feast for the returning soldiers, compare themselves to the gods and compare the beauty of their daughter, Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), to that of Aphrodite, Hades appears again, killing the remaining soldiers.

When Perseus is unaffected by his attack, Hades realizes he is a demigod, and tells him of his true father, Zeus.

Hades kills the queen, and demands that Argos further pay for its insolence and vanity; in 10 days, the Kraken will be released, and if the princess Andromeda is not sacrificed, then Argos will be destroyed.

Hades then seeks out the gods on Mount Olympus and convinces Zeus to agree to his plan in order to punish mankind for their lack of love.

Early life

Kardashian is of Armenian (father), Scottish and Dutch (mother) descent, the daughter of attorney Robert Kardashian and Kris Jenner (née Houghton).

Lindsay Dee Lohan (pronounced /LOH’-un/; born July 2, 1986) is an American actress, model, and pop singer. Lohan started in show business as a child fashion model.

At age 11, she made her motion picture debut in Disney’s 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.

Lohan rose to stardom between 2003 and 2005 with leading roles in the films Freaky Friday, Mean Girls and Herbie: Fully Loaded. She subsequently appeared in independent movies like Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion and Bobby.

Her career was interrupted in 2007 as two DUI incidents and three visits to rehabilitation facilities led to several lost movie deals.

She guest starred in the TV series Ugly Betty in 2008 and filmed Robert Rodriguez’s Machete in 2009.

Actress Lindsay Lohan described her lesbian relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson as “really scary” but said in an interview published on Tuesday that she still loves Ronson and hopes they will reconcile.

In a rare account of her and Ronson’s stormy 18-month relationship, the “Mean Girls” star told Britain’s The Sun newspaper that Ronson, 32, was the only woman she had ever been attracted to.

“It was a big deal for me because I’ve never had a relationship as public as that, especially being with a girl for the first time. That was really scary for me. But I didn’t care because I love her,” Lohan, 23, told The Sun in an interview in London.

“If I wasn’t with Samantha, I would probably be with a boy next. She’s the only woman I’ve been attracted to.

“We love each other. We might reconcile the relationship, maybe. I don’t know,” Lohan said.

The pair split in April 2009 after a tempestuous few months in which Lohan was seen in tears after nights out with Ronson. Lohan said they broke up because Ronson’s family and friends did not approve of her and the paparazzi her life attracts, but that they live in the same apartment building in Los Angeles and were still in touch.

Lohan also spoke to The Sun of her addiction to alcohol, cocaine and other prescription drugs, saying she hit rock bottom in 2007 when her estranged father started talking to the media about his daughter.

“I abused substances too much and it wasn’t the answer to my problems…I tried to mask my problems with alcohol, cocaine and mind-altering substances,” the newspaper reported.

Lohan said she was so terrified for herself that she checked into rehab for the first time. She later went back to rehab twice and was sent to jail briefly in 2007 for cocaine possession and drunk driving.

Lohan, who is still on probation, told The Sun that she was now clean. But she added “I’m allowed to drink now but I know my limits. There are certain situations where I have obligations. There’s no reason to (drink) because I don’t want to feel like shit in the morning,” Lohan said.
